Through our Prevention Above All Discoveries Grants, Medline is committing up to $1 million over several years to stimulate the gathering of solid evidence that supports the adoption of solutions into clinical practice. A review panel, whose members represent a breadth of research and practice knowledge, will select grant recipients to be awarded up to $25,000 each for pilot grants or $100,000 each for empirical studies.
Medline Prevention Above All Discoveries Grants objectives:
- To stimulate research that will lead to the development of new targeted interventions aimed at reducing medical risks and harms associated with hospital-acquired conditions (identified by CMS in 2008 IPPS final rule).
- To test the cost and effectiveness of interventions and programs designed to reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired conditions.
- To disseminate practical, evidence-based solutions within and across hospitals, leading to a reduction in hospital-acquired conditions.

International Infection Prevention Week is October 19-25!
10/14/2008
International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW) is just around the corner! The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC) has spearheaded IIPW since the campaign’s creation by President Ronald Reagan in the mid-1980s.
According to APIC, IIPW is designed to “shine the spotlight on our profession and its work in educating healthcare professionals, healthcare administrators, legislators and consumers about the importance of reducing the risk of infections.”
It’s easy to see why we think IIPW is so important. Two of the six targeted interventions of Prevention Above All are directly linked to infection prevention – Hospital-Acquired Infections and Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections. IIPW is an excellent opportunity to focus attention on these and other infections and the steps we can all take to prevent them.
The theme of this year’s IIPW is “Infection Prevention is Everyone’s Business.” APIC has set a goal of having all 50 states and Congress issue proclamations recognizing IIPW and the hard work and patient safety practices that infection preventionists perform in healthcare facilities throughout the nation. So far, 16 states are on board: Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina. Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

A report from the front lines
10/3/2008
On September 17 and 17, our Chief Marketing Officer, Sue MacInnes, partnered with Elizabeth Ayello, PhD,
RN, CNS-BC, WOC Nurse, FAPWCA, FAAN, internationally renowned wound expert, author and CMS consultant to address
the Southwestern Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders and Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders. The topic?
The upcoming CMS guideline changes and how they will affect care.
Sue and Dr. Ayello surveyed attendees – primarily nursing executives — prior to the meeting to determine the attendees’ biggest
concerns regarding the guideline changes. Perhaps not surprisingly, pressure ulcers topped the list. After all,
Pennsylvania just launched its statewide collaborative, called the Pennsylvania Pressure Ulcer Partnership, that aims to
provide a comprehensive approach to the identification, prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers within the commonwealth.
Dr. Ayello addressed the implications on practice and administration that the new CMS pressure ulcer policy will bring.
Sue then suggested solutions for overcoming some of the obstacles created by the new policy, including the adoption one of the
six targeted interventions of Prevention Above All — Pressure Ulcer Prevention.
